Brandy Stone and Ashley Smith (triple) each had two hits. Morgan Laing got the win with five strikeouts. March 24,2012 Frederick News Post South Carroll 6 Brunswick 5 8innings BRUNSWICK -- Morgan Laing's pitching against South Carroll Friday was worthy of a win. The Brunswick junior kept the Cavaliers guessing with nine strikeouts, but in the end, the Cavaliers earned a 6-5, eight-inning win. "Morgan pitched a phenomenal game," Brunswick softball coach Shannon Hogeback said. "We noticed they were swinging their bats a little slow, so she was able to take advantage of that." Laing went the distance, throwing 127 pitches and staying sharp. Even with that kind of pitching stamina, it wasn't enough against the Cavaliers, who ended Urbana's 21-game winning streak on Wednesday. An error allowed South Carroll to push across the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. The Railroaders (1-1) tied the score at 5-5 in the last of the seventh, with one out, when Becca Beachley scored Laing on a single to left field. Beachley tried to score on a Gabby Russo single, but was thrown out at the plate. In the top of the eighth, Taylor Hoff was put on second base, under international tie-breaker rules. Kristine Griffith bunted her to third on a sacrifice. Cindy Sheckels scored Griffith on a grounder to second base. The first baseman had trouble handling the throw and Sheckels was safe. Kaitlyn Denelsbeck was placed on second for Brunswick in its half of the seventh. Griffith struck out Jessica Lapole for the first out. Pinch-hitter Kare Lakin hit a grounder to shortstop. Denelsbeck was thrown out at third, and the third baseman threw to first to complete a game-ending double-play. "We took South Carroll right to the edge," Hogeback said. "Just didn't have quite enough at the end." South Carroll (2-0) took a 2-0 lead in the first, but Brunswick took advantage of three Cavaliers' errors to score three unearned runs for a 3-2 lead. South Carroll tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Shannon Ramey, and then took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on a Hoff single. Brunswick answered with a run in the sixth on an infleld single from Denelsbeck. Even in losing, the Railroaders took a lot of positives from the game. "In all the time I've been associated with this program, this was the most exciting game," Hogeback said. "Our players were saying the same thing. It was a great game." Russo led Brunswick with two hits. March 27, 2012 Frederick News Post Brunswick 13, S. Hagerstown 2 BRUNSWICK -- Becca Beachley had three hits with a triple and three RBIs to lead the Roaders (2-1).
