Smoltz activated to make Red Sox debut (AP) (sports.yahoo.com)

The Boston Red Sox have activated right-hander John Smoltz from the 15-day disabled list to start Thursday night's interleague game against the Washington Nationals. Smoltz, signed by Boston as a free agent in January, has been recovering from right shoulder surgery and has not pitched since a one-inning relief outing on June 2, 2008, for Atlanta against Florida.
