Hampton fires coach Holmes (AP) (sports.yahoo.com)

Hampton University has fired football coach Jerry Holmes and promoted defensive coordinator Donovan Rose to replace him. The Pirates finished the 2008 season 6-5, but lost four of their final five games. Holmes became coach in December 2007 after serving as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for three seasons.
