Illinois names Koenning def. coordinator (AP) (sports.yahoo.com)

Illinois has hired Kansas State co-defensive coordinator Vic Koenning to run its defense. Koenning said at a Friday news conference that Illinois has the talent to improve after going 3-9 last season. The Illini defense also gave up a conference-worst 30 points a game. Under Koenning, Kansas State gave up 28.4 points and 349.9 yards a game last season.
