Van Chancellor hustled up the stairs of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, running all the way to the top row of the 13,472-seat, bowl-shaped arena. LSU's 65-year-old Hall-of-Fame coach had promised the stair-climb if practice ended well. After laboring up the last few steps, he leaned against the wall to catch his breath while his players watched from the court in amusement.
